The very basic concept of privacy is an individual’s or group’s right to keep their information with themselves and only uncover certain general data about themselves.

There are numerous privacy-neglecting as well as privacy-protecting laws in different countries. According to these laws, the boundaries and limits of private data are established and it is decided that which data falls under the privacy category.

However, there are many nations in which privacy laws are adversely affecting the individual’s secrecy and some intrusive clauses could risk privacy from which many individuals are unaware.

Also, the national collaboration for data sharing or surveillance associations between countries such as the Five Eye could impact individual privacy. Therefore, an individual must know the privacy laws of his/her country and the national collaborations in such matter.

We will mainly focus these regulations as Internet Privacy laws because most of the personal data now is extracted through online channels.

Internet Privacy Laws Around The World

Internet Privacy Laws in the United States are broadly regulated under the preeminent law “Privacy Act of United States (1974)”.

The United Kingdom has the main law of GDPR which is also the basic data regulation for the European Union. However, the UK’s implementation of GDPR is known as the “Data Protection Act 2018”.

Almost all the EU countries have GDPR as basic regulation with some changes in their version. It could also be considered as the basic privacy regulation, thus falling under the category of internet privacy laws.

EU GDPR has given the right to every nation for the enactment of their own national data protection laws. Therefore, Germany was the first member state to implement its law after the GDPR2016/679 comes into force in May 2018.

In this regard, the main law “Federal Data Protection Act (FDPA)” or Bundesdatenschutzgesetz (BDSG) was approved by the German Federal Council.

The Broadcasting Services Act of Australia is the main regulation that encompasses the rules regarding internet privacy. The law was proposed in 1992 and till now there are various amendments to it.

The GDPR face in France is the Protection of Personal Data is in concordance with the new rules of GDPR. The already existing Law on the Protection of Personal Data 1978 was not enough to complete the transposition of the GDPR in France. So, the decree was issued (Decree no. 2018-687 of 1 August 2018) which took effect on 4 August 2018.

Canada has none of the specialized internet privacy law but there are two main privacy laws; the Privacy Act and the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). However, the other laws encompassing internet privacy rules are the Criminal Code, the Copyright Act, the Trademark Act, and could be others.
